Q What is acceptable personal identification & Proof of Residency?
     ID Requirements

A registry agent will require information to satisfy the following three categories:
Who you are   
  • Photo documents that must contain your legal name and date of birth (DOB). At least one of these documents must also prove that you are legally permitted to be in Canada. Some examples of primary photo identification are (this is not an all inclusive list):
    • Alberta operator's licence or identification card
    • Photo driver's licence (from another jurisdiction)
    • Images on the Motor Vehicles System (MOVES)
    • Photo identification card issued by another Motor Vehicle jurisdiction or government issued photo identification
    • Citizenship, Immigration, Naturalization, or Permanent Resident Card
    • Canadian Armed Forces Identification Card
    • Passport
    • Municipal, Territorial, Provincial or Federal Police Force Identification
What you have
  • Support documents that contain two data elements such as name, DOB, signature, address, etc. At least one of these documents must show that you live in Alberta and have a residence here. Some examples of original support documents (certified documents are acceptable) are:
    • Birth or Marriage Certificate
    • Credit, Debit or Account Card (must contain your name and signature)
    • Municipal, Territorial, Provincial, Federal Government Employee Card
    • Chequing or saving account statements
    • Cancelled cheque with imprinted name and address
    • Utility, telephone, gas or cable TV bill in applicant's name
    • Property tax bill or receipt, land title or mortgage documents
    • Income tax receipts
    • Insurance documents (life, auto, residential, etc.)
  • Some examples of unacceptable support documents are:
    • Interim/temporary driver's licence
    • Business cards
    • Cheque cashing cards
    • Library card
    • Video club membership cards
    • Insurance liability cards (pink cards)
What you know
   Verification of personal information against the Motor Vehicles System;your address,postal code, previous address, vehicle registrations, telephone number, etc. 
All documents presented must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies will NOT be accepted.
   Your registry agent will record the type of identification presented and the numbers associated with it, e.g., VISA 2134 0300 3620.
Please Note: Falsifying information when applying for a driver's licence
                      or identification card is a criminal offence.
 
Q What do I need to bring with me to register my new vehicle?
 
You must provide proof of ownership or bill of sale, valid insurance and acceptable ID. If the vehicle is leased you must provide a lease agreement. If the vehicle is new you also need to produce the NVIS (New Vehicle Information Statement).
 
Q I’ve bought a vehicle from another province. What do I need to register it?
 
You will need to bring in the serial number of the vehicle and have an Out of Province Inspection Request print at a cost of $9.45. Then have a government approved licensed mechanic perform an out of Province Inspection. We have a list of licensed OOP mechanics in our area.Bring in your original OOP inspection certificate, valid proof of insurance, proof of ownership, bill of sale, lease or previous OOP registration and 1 piece of acceptable ID, to register your vehicle.
 
Q I think I have some outstanding fines. Can I pay them there?
 
Yes - You can pay current and overdue fines at our Registry. Our service fee is $9.45 per fine paid. To pay a current fine we need to have the original yellow ticket.
 
Q If I can’t come in to do a service, can I send someone in my place?
 
A Letter of Authorization is required to have someone else do a service for you. The letter requires the service, a date, signature, your name and a description including any applicable VIN Number,vehicle description and service required. Letters of Authorization are accepted for all services except operator licence services that  must be done in person.
 
Q Can I come in and get an abstract for my spouse?
 
A person’s abstract is confidential.  A Drivers Abstract Consent is required for you to obtain an abstract for anyone but yourself.  The person bringing in the Abstract Consent will be required to present identification and will be required to fill out a Driver Abstract Statement of Intent.
 
Q What methods of payment do you accept?
 
We accept cash, cheque, debit or credit card  for all services except overdue fines, they must be paid by cash, debit or certified cheque.
